Is bitter beer for better Bibles?

Peter Kirk has posted on the wording "the beer is bitter to its drinkers" in Is. 24:9. There is a dialect issue here which American English Bible translators may not be aware of. Read Peter's post to find out more.

Not sure if it's a dialect issue, it's more that some English speakers have poor taste in beer!

It may not help, of course, that many American Bible translators (not so many British ones probably) are abstainers and so have no taste in beer at all. Should I suggest that people who translate passages about alcoholic drink should have personal experience of what they are translating? Well, maybe not, for I'm sure we shouldn't apply the same principle to, for example, adultery.
