It seems that at least some of the ranking is due to marketing.
For example, on a recent visit to our local christian bookstore, I saw stacks of NKJV paperbacks being sold by the case.
Also, those who visit christian bookstores are probably mostly church-goers. So, preference based on their church's usage is weighed in as well.
I wonder if part of this is also due to the TNIV. Some of the people who would otherwise have bought NIVs are now buying TNIVs.
I can't imagine why anyone who is relatively informed would buy the NKJV given its faulty textual basis (and those who know of the issue but prefer the newer texts tend to buy the KJV), but I suppose most Bible buyers aren't relatively well-informed.
